Why A/C is a Must-have in Florida

The Florida Heat Isn't the Only Reason You Need Your AC

Our northern friends frequently ask how we can stand the summers in Florida, but for those of us who live here year round, those hot temps are a small price to pay for our beautiful falls, winters and springs. Plus with a well-working A/C unit the summers are as nice as the rest of the year.

But boy do you notice it when that air conditioner goes out! That’s why so many people rely on our maintenance plans, where you not only save money but receive priority service times as well. If your A/C goes out in the summer, that benefit alone makes the program worth it. We hear this again and again from our customers. They trust us to get them up and running quickly and we’re always here for them.

We often tell people operating an efficient A/C unit is about more than comfort down here in Florida. It helps with home maintenance. Here’s how:

Heat + Humidity = Mold Playground

Even if you don’t mind the heat, Florida heat contains a lot of moisture. No matter how hot and humid it is outside, inside it will be even more so without the A/C running, especially if your home’s newer and well sealed.

Moisture and heat create a mold playground. It doesn’t matter how clean your home is, without some method of cooling the air or removing the humidity, you may have mold in places you can’t see including behind your walls, in your ducts, and behind tile.

Areas that are naturally humid in your home, like bathrooms, are even more prone to mold. You may see it growing in corners of your bathroom where the wall meets the ceiling, or around baseboards. Toilets that aren’t often flushed, with lids that are kept down, may get a ring of mold at the water line if you’re not running the A/C.

People frequently keep rooms dark if they’re trying cool them down. Darkness is a friend of mold.

Now you have hot, humid, dark rooms. You just issued an invitation to every mold spore in the sunshine state.

How an A/C keeps the Mold at Bay

Mold loves air with humidity levels of 70% or higher and if it’s not moving, as in the case of a home not using the A/C, the spores can quickly grow undisturbed.

An air conditioner removes moisture from the air, cools it down, and circulates it making the environment less appealing to rapid mold growth.

A/C and Allergies

In addition to mold, your properly maintained A/C (with clean ductwork and regularly changed filter) can cut down on the number of pollens and other allergens in the air. This will improve air quality as well as comfort.

Try keeping your A/C on throughout the summer even if you keep the temperatures at 78 or 80 to keep your electricity bill lower. A higher electricity bill beats mold remediation any day. And if you discover you have a mold problem, be sure to contact a certified and licensed mold removal specialist.
